American coin silver swing handle basket with applied, elongated beaded rims and handle by Eoff and Shepard for Ball Black and Company, both of New York City, c.1855 - 1860. Edgar Mortimer Eoff and George L. Shepard had their shop at 83 Duane St in New York City, c.1855 - 1860 and made many pieces of fine quality silver for Ball Black and Company, one of New York City's leading retailers. The Bust Lion Beehive mark used on this basket has been previously attributed to Eoff and Shepard. We would think that the use of this mark along with the E&S mark verifies that attribution. Apparently the Bust, Lion, Beehive mark is seldom seen. One side of the basket has an ornate, period script monogram: ED and a Rooster Crest. Both are clear and well engraved. The pictures do not give that impression. Weighing 299 grams or 9.6 ozs. Troy, this especially attractive basket is 6 1/8" long, 4" wide, 5" tall to the rim and 7" tall to the top of the handle. Monogrammed and crested as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing. The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering. [r2497]
